Dr. Walter Collins
Published a chapter on Post-colonial African literature and texts in The Cultural History of Reading (Greenwood Press). The chapter examines readership and reading practices of African literature and African texts and speeches.  (December 2008)

Presented “Blogging Motherhood:  Redefining Literary and Cultural Definitions of Maternal Identity,” South Atlantic Modern Language Association, Louisville, KY, November 2008.  (December 2008)

Prof. Phillip Parker
Attended the South Carolina Tax Council Fall Seminar in Myrtle Beach where a variety of topics were discussed including tax, retirement, and investment planning.  In addition, he recently was awarded a certificate for completing the professional education program on MS Quickbooks.  (December 2008)

Prof. Lorene Harris
Published a photographic essay, “Glimpses of a Nearby Nation: The Making of Catawba Pottery with Georgia Harris and Edith Harris Brown," with photographs by Thomas J. Blumer and an introduction by Brett H. Riggs, in the Winter 2008 issue of Southern Cultures.  (December 2008)

Dr. Walter Collins
Presented a scholarly paper on Uzodinma Iweala's novel Beasts of No Nation.  "'Just Like That. I Am Soldier': Constructing Identity in Iweala’s Beasts of No Nation" at the annual meeting of the Pacific Ancient and Modern Language Association.   (November 2008)

Completed the first year of the College Business Management Institute (CBMI) at the University of Kentucky. CBMI is an intensive course of study in business and financial management for administrators of colleges and universities. (October 2008)

Dr. Kate Holland
Presented data from two research projects at the National Academy for Neuropsychology 28th Annual Meeting in New York, New York. Her first presentation was entitled: “A Functional Cerebral Systems Approach to Hostility: Changes in Design Fluency Performance as a Function of Exposure to Physiological Stress.”  Her second presentation was entitled: “Changes in Right Frontal Lobe Delta Activation as a Function of Hostility and Stress.” (October 2008)

Co-authored a paper, "Photometric Analysis and 60-year Period Study of the Detached but Near- Contact System VV Virginis," in the October 2008 Astronomical Journal. (October 2008)

Dr. Kate Holland
Recently had a manuscript accepted for publication in Psychological Bulletin: 
Carmona, J. E., Holland, A. K., & Harrison, D. W. (in press). Extending the Functional Cerebral Systems Theory of Emotion to the Vestibular Modality: A Systematic and Integrative Approach. Psychological Bulletin.  (October 2008)

Dr. Kate Holland
Presented her research at the Society for Psychophysiological Research 48th Annual Meeting in Austin, Texas.  Her research is entitled: "Differences in Cerebral Lateralization of Heart Rate and Time Estimation as a Function of Hostility Level."  (October 2008)

Prof. Brent Burgin
Collaborated with the South Carolina Digital Library to create the first ever statewide digital collection documenting Catawba Indian history and culture from the early 19th century until present day. (October 2008)

Attended the South Carolina Digital Library Midlands Meeting and the South Carolina Archival Association (SCAA) Fall Conference, where he was elected as junior director for 2009.  (October 2008)

Dr. Ron Cox
Wrote a chapter entitled "'Integration with [Relative] Dignity' -- The Desegregation of Clemson College and George McMillan's Article at Forty" included in Toward the Meeting of the Waters: Currents in the Civil Rights Movement of South Carolina during the Twentieth Century published by University of South Carolina Press, 2008.  (September 2008)

Dr. Bruce Nims
Published book review of The Republic of Mass Culture, 3rd Ed., by James L. Baughman, in the Spring, 2008, edition of Studies in Popular Culture.  Dr. Nims is the Humanities Division Chair and a Professor of English. (July 2008)

Prof. Fran Gardner
Had three entries selected to tour in the Embroiderer's Guild of America traveling exhibit for the next three years at major art centers across the United States. Her work was also included in this exhibit the last time it toured, from 2004 - 2007. Prof. Gardner is an Associate Professor of Art. (July 2008)

Prof. Fran Gardner
Was invited to judge the Aiken Artists Guild annual exhibit at the Aiken Center of the Arts in May. In the course of her work judging, they became interested in her work and scheduled her for a solo exhibit this September.  Prof. Gardner is an Associate Professor of Art.  (July 2008)

Received the Teaching with Technology Tablet PC Grant administered by the Center for Teaching Excellence, USC Columbia. Martek and Collins will receive a Tablet PC and will investigate the use of these computers in their respective courses during the 2008-2009 academic year to increase student engagement with the material and to better facilitate collaboration and feedback. Won an Honorable Mention at the Southern Arts Society exhibit titled "I Am Woman" which was judged by Juan Logan, Associate Professor of Art and Director of Graduate Studies and Admissions for Studio Art at UNC Chapel Hill.   The show is at the Southern Art Society in Kings Mountain, NC, and runs through June 8. Film of his original screenplay "Hole in the Paper Sky" won the AUDIENCE CHOICE AWARD at the 1st Charleston International Film Festival Gala at the Francis Marion Hotel ballroom in Charleston, SC. (May 2008)

Avis Richardson Clyburn
Named to Who's Who Among Students in American Junior Colleges. She was selected along with 46 other students from University of South Carolina Lancaster who have been selected as national outstanding campus leaders.  (April 2008)

Psychology Faculty and Students
Psychology Professors Dr. Mark Coe, Dr. Terri Polenski and Ms. Dianne Evans and Tracey Mobley, Human Resources Director, along with Psychology Club students Jennifer Kirby, Susan Miller, Crystal Truesdale, and Lee Moreland  attended the South Carolina Psychological Association's annual conference held at Myrtle Beach, May 28-30.  Featured keynote speaker was  Dr. Philip Zimbardo, professor emeritus of psychology at Stanford University.
